Best beach campsites

For many of us our fondest childhood memories are of summers spent on the beach with family, building sandcastles, swimming and playing beach cricket!

The coastline of Australia is dotted with many fantastic camping opportunities, but come summer time, especially during the school holidays, they can get booked out early. You could try some of these 10 great sites around the coast:

Johanna Beach, Great Ocean Walk, Victoria, located in the Otway National Park on the Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles, the camping ground offers over one hundred free individual campsites.

Conto’s Field campground, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Western Australia, located 20kms south of Margaret River with beautiful crystal blue waters where you can catch free salmon for your dinner.

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands National Park, Queensland, located close to Shute Harbour and accessed by boat, it is one of the most well-known campsites with its white sand beaches and access to the Great Barrier Reef.

Bruny Island, Tasmania, where you can camp for free and enjoy its profusion of diverse wildlife, including fur seals, wallabies and fairy penguins.

Broome ‘s northern beaches, Western Australia, with free camping and fish aplenty, this 14km stretch is a much quieter and more relaxing alternative to the more popular beaches closer to Broome.

Southern Ocean Beach, South Australia is an isolated spot located 180km south east of Adelaide where you will enjoy stunning sunrises and sunsets.

Yuraygir National Park, NSW, located near the surf beach at Angourie where you can spend your days surfing, canoeing or exploring the many walking trails.

Cave Beach, Booderee National Park, ACT, a three hour drive from Sydney situated in Booderee National Park.

75-mile Beach, Fraser Island, Queensland, where you can camp anywhere along the beach as long as you are at least 50m from a water source.

Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park, Western Australia, just 40 minutes from Esperance.
