Accessible airport lounges

With a little research into airports, whether departure or stop-over, you will discover many airlines have lounges to which you can gain access. Many offer pay-per-use airport lounges where you can take advantage of features such as meals, snacks and beverages, free wifi access and computer workstations to catch up on work (or update your Facebook status). In some cases there may even be showers, massages and sleep rooms.

There is a free app available for iPhones called Lounge Buddy which tells you all you need to know about where and how to access airport lounges. It currently covers 60 of the world’s busiest airports, including some 700 lounges, with more airports added regularly. Lounge Buddy will advise whether the lounge is inside or outside of the airport security screening, the specific location within the airport – including the terminal, concourse and nearest gate. It summarises the available services, rates of entry and hours of opening.

Individual airlines such as Virgin offer access to its Virgin Australia Lounge members, Velocity Platinum or Gold members. Non-Members travelling with the airline can purchase Single Entry to the lounge on the day of travel with a valid boarding pass.

Alternatively, you can purchase a membership to an airport lounge access program such as Priority Pass. For less than $100 per annum you will receive to around 700 lounges worldwide.

If you have a Diners Club card, you can gain access to more than 500 Diners Club Lounges worldwide.

Do you have any tips on how fellow travellers can access airport lounges?
